The first sound we ever heard while still in our mother’s womb, was the beating of her heart, and the rhythm of her breath. No matter our race, gender, age, religion or belief system, this common experience exists for all human beings.

Rhythm is our natural inheritance. It exists in our bodies, our hearts & our breath. It exists in the vibration of atoms, the cycles of the seasons, the ticking of clocks, the orbit of the earth. There is no part of creation that is without rhythm!

Everybody has a sense of rhythm.

Drumming is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression. It is a practice that spans the globe and has a presence in every culture, from healing or spiritual rituals to celebrations. No matter what our age and ability, whenever we hear drumming, we all begin to move to those universal rhythms inside us.

No lessons needed. Anyone can sit and beat out a rhythm on a drum. It can be as simple as getting lost in the simplicity of mimicking the heartbeat.

Drum Circles are a great way to pack up all your tension, stress and troubles and send them off with the sound waves of the drum. The release is phenomenal. It is an opportunity to express oneself in a free-form, non-judgmental, improvisational environment. Newcomers often say that they don’t have any rhythm in an attempt to excuse themselves from participation in a drum circle.
The truth is: We all have Rhythm.

The drum has the extraordinary and consistent ability to create states of euphoria, and promote feelings of community, unity and promote well being.

In the medical field, the hand drum is being used to help Alzheimer’s patients to improve their short-term memory and increase social interaction, to help autistic children increase their attention spans, and to help high risk people redirect their energy. Rhythmic devices are also being used to aid Parkinson’s patients and stroke victims to regain the control of movement.

Music calls to our soul. It calls to places that people have blocked and, sometimes it calls to places that people can’t block, and that’s why drumming works. “Alchemical drumming” is the process of transmuting what is unhealthy in the body and releasing it through the drum.

If you haven’t already, come experience a drum circle and see what it does for you. The mere inner peace & vibration of rhythm should be enticing enough.
